Value Stream Mapping
The central competency taught by the course is the ability to understand and improve process efficiency and effectiveness through the creation of an original value-stream map. That map then serves as a model for future analyses of the elements that give true value to the process. Value may be defined as those elements which add uniqueness or competitive advantage to the organization. Relevant skills enhanced by the course are data collection, data analysis, and the use of the define-measure-analyze-improve-control system. Concepts are elaborated upon in other required, courses and should be integral to the project.
This course also imparts the knowledge and teaches the skill to transform theory into practice to create an original value stream map via the dissertation project. The project requires the comparative analysis of before and after process maps which illustrate the intervention of the student via action research to improve the underlying process. The value stream map is an overlay on the process map which helps calculate ROI from the process improvements.
This course is delivered in on-line modules complemented by off-line review and assistance. On-site, in person meetings are offered when possible.
