Lean and Six Sigma Applications in Health Systems
This course builds core competency in lean methods, six sigma analyses, and the utilization of the define-measure-analyze-improve-control (DMAIC) model to support continuous quality improvement (CQI) in health systems. The course builds skill mastery in close analysis of data collection and analysis. The course also extends knowledge of the development and history of lean thinking and six sigma management application from the modern through contemporary periods. Lean and six-sigma-related vocabulary, e.g. muda, kaizen, is integrated with traditional quality system concepts such as value stream mapping. The skills and vocabulary are taught through examples of traditional healthcare examples, such as surgical site infections (SSI) and patient safety.
In an earlier era, lean and six sigma content focused on high-level statistical analysis. AMU leadership has taught lean and six sigma programs since 1995, and has evolved to the use of statistics to improve understanding of process failure as opposed to the application of statistics as an end in itself. In addition, this course includes many examples of transactional analyses in health care rather than simply traditional manufacturing. Thus, six sigma principles and best practices may be utilized by students from diverse backgrounds who need not have any prior statistical training or coursework.
The AMU-approved software for the course is MiniTab, a commercially available software recognized as the benchmark for lean/six sigma analysis. MiniTab has made their software available at reduced cost to AMU students for employment in AMU programs.
This course is delivered in on-line modules complemented by off-line review and assistance. On-site, in person meetings are offered when possible.
