This course builds the core competency of understanding benchmarking as a strategic initiative in healthcare.  The course begins by discussing primary and secondary benchmarking and uses case-studies in health care to consider which form of benchmarking is most suitable for each student’s employer or potential employer.  Health Systems students discuss the concept of competitive benchmarking by one health system to gain market share over another health system.  Master’s students must complete primary or secondary benchmarking as it relates to the project.

This course is delivered in on-line, on-line, on-site or blended modules complemented by off-line review and assistance.

Course Goals
Deliver graduate level knowledge of principles and best practices of benchmarking.

Course Objectives

  • Teach how the elements of benchmarking assist assessment of project results in healthcare
  • Explain and demonstrate the skilled calculation of return on investment (ROI) from benchmarking in healthcare
  • Discuss systematic applications of benchmarking in healthcare
