This course builds core competency calculating the true cost of cost of poor quality (COPQ). i.e., errors which were unnecessary and which cost the organization unnecessary overhead, penalties and fines, lost sales, customer-enforced performance discounts, and reduced or eliminated profit. The course builds skill mastery in close analysis of the cost of process failure and non-compliance with customer requirements or state and/or federal regulations. In order to calculate those unnecessary costs, the course monitors and evaluates process maps, value stream maps, and data in general. All AMU doctoral students are required to assess COPQ as part of the dissertation project.

Course Format
This course is delivered in on-line modules complemented by off-line review and assistance. On-site, in person meetings are offered when possible.

Course Goals
Deliver doctoral level knowledge of principles and best practices of monitoring, assessing and calculating cost of poor quality.

Course Objectives

  • Teach how the elements of a cost of poor quality (COPQ) system assist assessment of project results
  • Explain and demonstrate the skilled calculation of cost of poor quality (COPQ) and the define-measure-analyze-improve-control (DMAIC) model
  • Discuss systematic applications of cost of poor quality COPQ in the dissertation project
