The central competency taught by the course is the ability to understand an education-related process using a process map and analyze a problem using quality system tools such fishbone diagrams, concepts such as value streams, and vocabulary such as tall poles. Relevant skills enhanced by the course are data collection, data analysis, and the use of the define- measure- analyze- improve-control system. Concepts are elaborated upon in required, courses and should be integral to the project.
This course also imparts the knowledge and teaches the skill to transform theory into practice to create an original process map via the dissertation project. The project requires the comparative analysis of before and after process maps which illustrate the intervention of the student via action research to improve the underlying process.
This course is delivered in on-line modules complemented by off-line review and assistance. On-site, in person meetings are offered when possible.
